CLIU Student Programs Calendar 2008-2009

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Governor's Schools of Excellence are five-week-long, paid in full scholarship summer residential programs on college campuses throughout the state committed to meeting the needs of artistically and academically talented high school students. An emphasis is placed on leadership training, with a focus on local service projects. Applications for the 2009 program will be available in October in your guidance office or online. Deadline for applications is early next year.

The 5th Annual Regional Middle School Computer Fair will be held at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, in Schnecksville, on Friday, March 6, 2009 (Snow date: March 27, 2009). This event is part of the statewide 2009 PA Computer Fair Competition, with regional winners moving on to compete at the state competition at Dickinson College on May 20, 2009.

The 9th Annual Regional High School Computer Fair will be held at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, in Schnecksville, on Thursday, April 2, 2009. This event is part of the statewide 2009 PA Computer Fair Competition, with regional winners moving on to compete at Dickinson College on May 19, 2009.

The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit Regional Academic Competition will be held at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, in Schnecksville, on Friday, April 13, 2009 (Snow date: April 16, 2009). This event is part of the statewide 2009 PA Academic Competition, with regional winners moving on to compete at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building, Harrisburg, PA from 9 - 5 pm, on Friday, April 24, 2009. The competition can also be viewed on PCN live.

The 3rd Annual Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit Digital Video Camp will be held at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, in Schnecksville, the week of July 6-10. The camp is open to students entering grades 6-12 for the 2009-2010 school year. The week long camp focuses on video editing, scriptwriting, storyboarding and videography. The camp culminates with a showcase of the campers finished projects in front of family and friends.

The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit will host the 2nd Annual Elementary School Computer Fair at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, in Schnecksville on Tuesday March 24, 2009. Students in grades 1-3 may enter into the showcase and students in grades 4-5 will be judged. The categories include: Desktop Publishing, Digital Movie, Logo Design and Multimedia.

The Technology Wizards program provides schools with the opportunity to develop a cadre of student and teacher leaders equipped with the skills to transform the delivery of professional development by teaming up to three students and one advisor from a school building as a team to attend training sessions at CLIU 21. At each session the team experiences hands-on training in an emerging technology, along with coaching and mentoring guidance followed by planning time to develop an agenda for the delivery of professional development to the team's school faculty. Tech Wizard meeting dates: 10/28/08, 12/09/08, 01/08/09, 02/04/09, 03/04/09, 04/16/09 and 05/28/09.

Student Forum is hosted each month, October-May, by a school district in Lehigh and Carbon Counties. The purpose of Student Forum is to discuss current issues of concern to high school students and share this information with their peers at their respective schools. Student Forum is comprised of 4 student representatives from each member district: CCTI, Dieruff, Emmaus, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Catasauqua, Northwestern, Palmerton, Panther Valley, Parkland, Weatherly, Whitehall and William Allen.

Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit's Inagural Digital Photography Contest will be held on November 18, 2008 at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit. Middle School (6-8) and high school (9-12) students are encouraged to participate. Middle and high school students will be divided into two divisions with the opportunity to compete in four different categories: Scenic Carbon & Lehigh Counties, Action Sports, Animals & Wildlife and Digitally Enhanced. The Technology Wizards, Jr. program provides schools the opportunity to transform instructional practice by fusing student technology skills with teacher content knowledge in a problem-based learning environment. The program teams up to three elementary students and one teacher/advisor from a school building to attend training sessions at CLIU 21. At each session the team experiences hands-on training in an emerging technology followed by planning time to develop a problem-based lesson or unit incorporating the technology. Tech Wizard, Jr. meeting dates: 10/21/08, 12/11/08, 02/19/09, 04/20/09 and 05/28/09.
