Entering and Editing Text

Cursor Movement

Ctrl-right arrow -- end of line

Ctrl-left arrow --beginning of line

Cut/Copy/Paste

  1. Press the Shift and an arrow key to select the text (Command-A selects Everything)
  2. Ctrl-X to Cut
  3. Ctrl-C to Copy
  4. Ctrl-V to paste within the current file or to another file

Spell Check

  1. Press the Spell Check key
  2. Arrow to correct suggestion and press Enter
  3. Press I to Ignore
  4. Press E to Edit the word
  5. Press C for context of the sentence

Find

  1. Press the Find key
  2. Type up to 16 characters to search for (not case sensitive)
  3. Press Enter to search the current file
  4. Press Option-Enter to search all 8 files.

To Recover Text that Has Been Accidentally Deleted

Deleting a File

  1. With the file to be deleted open, press the Clear File key
  2. Choose Yes

 

Transferring Data

Transfer to the Computer

  1. You can transfer the text from AlphaSmart to any program that accepts text on a Macintosh or PC
  2. Open the Word Processing program on your computer
  3. Plug the AlphaSmart in to the computer with the cable provided
  4. Press the Send key on the AlphaSmart

Transfer to the Printer

  1. Using the special cable that connects your AlphaSmart to your printer, plug the AlphaSmart in to the printer
  2. Press the Send key
  3. The text will be double-spaced when it prints

Transfer Speed

If your data is not transferring to the computer correctly, try changing the transfer speed using the key combination Command-Option-S

Miscellaneous Features

Keyboarding Timer

Students can take typing times to test their typing speed on the AlphaSmarts

  1. Press Command-Find
  2. Press CapsLock key to stop
  3. Note that the Backspace key is disabled during timings.

Calculator

  1. Press the Applets button
  2. Choose the Calculator

Get Utility

The Get Utility is a separate piece of software that allows you to copy text from your computer to an AlphaSmart. Install the Get Utility software on your computer before performing the following steps.

  1. Connect the AlphaSmart to your computer
  2. Open the program that contains that text to be copied
  3. Using the Copy tool on your computer, copy the text to be transferred
  4. Open the Get Utility program
  5. Press the file number on the AlphaSmart where you want to text copied
  6. In the Get Utility program, click on the Send Text to AlphaSmart button
